Chanel transformed the Grand Palais into a forest emerging from the winter frost for their spring haute couture collection.  The show started out with the classic tweeds and moved into long beaded gowns covered in camellias and showing the masterful work of the women at Maison Lesage and closed with romantic feather and lace creations.  Two brides, representing a lesbian couple, emerged in matching dresses holding the hand of Karl Lagerfeld’s four year old godson Hudson Kroenig (who has already appeared in three other Chanel shows already).  Now if only Karl was my godfather too so I could wear one of these beautiful pieces.  Sigh.

    Blog Update

Just thought I would make a quick update to point out that I’ve just added comments to my blog.  It had been bothering me that I was without this feature since I use tumblr as my platform, but with some easy coding I’ve solved the problem.

I love sales!Yesterday I went out to finally get a flu shot (they were all out) and I ended up doing some shopping instead.  While “sale” used to be a dirty word for me, when I stared to be eased off of my parents financial support I had to get a little bit savvy and now I don’t know why I didn’t start shopping them more before.  I found a beautiful Kate Spade bag for almost half off, although it’s obviously a spring bag so I won’t be carrying it for the next few months.  I also picked up some winter wardrobe staples, a few new pairs of Current/Elliot jeans and a couple fun pieces like a faux fur Betsey Johnson gilet.  I did encounter a small problem when I unpacked my purchases though.  My closet seems to have shrunk…or my wardrobe has gotten out of control lately.  Either way I’m working on designs for a new closet.

coat and hat - H&M, jeans- Current/Elliot, cuff - Hermes, bag - c/o BRAHMIN (via The Vogue Influencer Network), sunglasses and ring - Chanel, scarf - BINDYA

I like the snow up until about mid-January, so about another week or so until I’m sick of it and start dreaming of summer.  Right now I’m still having fun wearing scarves and layering, but I’m always loosing my gloves.  The gold bracelets I’m wearing were given to me by my mom over the years, my wrists are tiny though so I usually tangle them all together so they don’t slip off.  I received the bag from BRAHMIN as a member of The Vogue Influencer Network.  It’s big enough to carry everything I need including my DSLR, but still light and not bulky making it perfect for everyday use.  I also love that they’re an American brand based near Boston and that all of their bags come with a two year warranty, which is something that even most of the very expensive European bags I own don’t have.  Floppy hats are another love of mine, and I found this one at H&M while Christmas shopping with my sister-in-law and couldn’t resist it, especially since it was on sale.  These pictures make me realizes that I really need a haircut.

I’m a little bummed that the holiday season has come to an end.  I love driving myself crazy trying the find the perfect gifts, wrapping presents while listening to christmas songs on Pandora, the smell of fresh baked cookies and seeing my family.  This is the first weekend in over a month with no cocktail parties or christmas shopping.  My mom throws a big annual holiday party right before christmas and I got to finally wear the Valentino dress that I had to have, but has been sitting in my closet for six months.  I added some sparse, but glittering silver and gold accessories to the finish off the look.  At the eleventh hour I realized that I didn’t have an evening clutch that would go with my outfit, but I improvised with a clutch that came with a set of Ulta makeup brushes or all things.  I must make a New Years resolution to buy more evening bags.

in spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart -Anne Frank

I wasn’t quite sure how, or ever if I should approach the topic of last weeks shootings on my blog.  Its doesn’t seem like something that should be talked about alongside posts about Chanel and photos from fashion shows, but as a resident of Fairfield County I felt I had to say something because like most people it has continued to occupy my thoughts. I know Newtown very well.  I have friends who live there and my family even considered moving to Newtown when we left New York.  As anyone who follows my twitter may have seen, I knew one of the victims.  Through the midst of my tears I’ve found myself stopping to smile when memories of her fill my mind because she was so funny and full of life.  She died a hero, giving her own life to shield the young children she worked with and I’m very proud to have known her.  My heart is in pieces for her family and two younger sisters.  They’re a wonderful and very close family and they shouldn’t have to be going through this, none of these families should.
Oddly, my faith in humanity has been restored after all of this.  Seeing the outpour of love, support and kindness coming not just from neighboring areas, but across the country and other areas of the world made me realize that for the most part people are really good.  There are so many more kind hearted people out there like the first responders and the six women who died trying to protect their students, than there are like the gunman.

I could go on and on about the symbolism of the Camellia and my attraction to it beyond just my name, so I think it’s almost meant to be that it is also one of the icons of my favorite label.  There’s something comforting to me about Chanel, I often joke that it’s “my Tiffany’s” (à la Holly GoLightly).  My grandmother is 93 years old and even in the retirement home is still never without cap-toe flats or Chanel No.5, which she’s been wearing since the late ’30s.  My mother was given her first Chanel bag at age 14, although she admits that at the time she didn’t really know what to do with it.  But I think what really ties it all in for me is the image of my great-grandmother, an early customer of Chanel, who I’ve always admired very much despite not knowing much about her because she died so young.  I think it says a lot about a label that has been loved so much by four generations of women from one family.
